A Letter of Invitation

From the National Chief and National Vice Chief of the Order of the Arrow

July 1999

Dear lodge officers and fellow Arrowmen,

We have been given an exciting opportunity. In honor of Scouting's 90th anniversary, the Coleman Company - maker of camp stoves, lanterns and other outdoors equipment - has committed to help fund the cost of an outdoor experience for 90 Scouts from throughout America. And Coleman has asked the Order of the Arrow to take the lead in selecting those recipients.

We need your help. We are asking you to take two actions that will help this program succeed:

1. Get the word out. Every Scout in every troop and Varsity Scout team in the nation may apply. Thus, it is our responsibility to give every Scout the opportunity to take part in this exciting undertaking. To do this, you will need to send a Troop/Team Information Form and a copy of the Scout Application to every troop and team in your council. These documents have been enclosed to be reproduced locally. You may also want to make presentations at district roundtable meetings or other council events. You may want to take advantage of the OA troop representatives in disseminating this information.

2. Select one council nominee. The documents you distribute to troops and teams instruct each unit to nominate one Scout and return his application to the local council service center. It will be your job - however you see fit - to select from those unit nominations one Scout's application to represent your council in the national selection process. We encourage your lodge selection process to be youth-led.

We are very honored that Coleman has turned to the OA for selection of the 90 recipients. We hope that you will join us in this exciting project. While fall is a very busy time for Scouting, we feel optimistic that you are as enthusiastic as we are about giving Scouts the opportunity to win an exciting outdoor experience.

Thank you for everything that you do for Scouting and the Order of the Arrow.
