National Vice Chief Interview
Larry Newton, the 2007 National Vice Chief, was asked by the national web
site staff to answer some questions about the OA and his experiences. Let's
take a look at what he had to say.
First Thoughts on Your Election?
My first thoughts of my election were "Wow! I cannot believe this has just
happened to me." Then I began to reflect of my past experiences in Scouting and
the many lives that have already touched mine. At that point, I realized the
unique opportunity I have to affect just as many lives.
How do you feel to be a national officer? What do you find most exciting
about the role?
As previously stated, it is a great honor to be a national officer. The feeling
is much like that of when you first become a member of this extraordinary
organization. I find it most exciting to have the opportunity to serve and lead
my brothers.
What are you most looking forward to?
Aside from the unique opportunity to travel and meet and interact with new
people, I look forward to being there for everyone to help them become better
Arrowmen.
What are your earliest memories of the OA?
My earliest memories of the OA were completing my Ordeal and standing at the
Council Circle and reciting the Obligation of our Order. From there, the
memories have only continued to grow.
What was your first leadership position, and what was the greatest lesson
you learned from it?
My first leadership position was lodge Publications Committee Chairman. The
greatest lesson that I learned was that I was solely responsible to complete my
tasks on time because no one else was going to do the job.
What is the coolest thing you've done in Scouting?
It is hard to distinguish the coolest thing I have done in Scouting. Until the
2006 NOAC, where I served on TOAP staff, after that I would have to say the
2001 National Scout Jamboree.
What makes you proudest to be an Arrowman?
I believe what makes me the proudest to be an Arrowman is the same thing across
the border for all: The ability to be a brother and serve our fellow man
cheerfully.
What awesome things have you done in the OA?
So far in the OA, I have taught on numerous NLS staffs, have attended the 2002
and 2006 NOAC's , numerous conclaves, and OA Trail Crew.
What makes the OA so cool?
The instant bond of brotherhood felt by all members is what makes the OA so
cool. It does not matter where one is from all members of the OA accept one
another with open arms.
