July 15th, Day Nine - Whoops
Everyone got up and I put a fresh pot of coffee on the stove. We ate breakfast
and packed up the campsite in no time.

An Eagle rests on a near by tree.

We got on the water and left Lake Insula heading south. It was a clear sunny
day, though it was a tad bit windy. We were doing quite well until we landed into
a slight problem: a river to Isabella Lake was no where to be found. We needed to
go to Isabella lake to achieve our south route around the Superior National Forest
to loop around through Canada and get back to the base. This was our treks plan.
We spent about two hours looking for this river, which seemed to have dried up.
To calm our nerves, we took a lunch break to recap our navigation. Sadly, we
were in the right place. The small river must have dried up and we were forced to
head back the exact opposite direction we came in. By the time the sun was setting,
we found a campsite on Lake Insula—the same lake we left from in the morning.

Re-mapping a new route.
|
Our new campsite was essentially a 10 minute canoe paddle from the one last night. We
paddled for hours only to go back and forth searching for the river. However, the day was not
wasted. We got a chance to see some of the best views of the wilderness; beaver,
moose tracks, eagles, and hawks were just some of the sights outside from the wild
berries and flowers.
We cooked dinner and planned out the future of the trek with our itinerary change.
Our trek would not be drastically effected, as we were going to head east across
the Superior National Forest and more north instead of south. We all laughed about the
day as we had our regular reflection. Everyone went fast asleep that night, only
to wake up early the next day.
